  • grains of sand in an oyster

  • little bits of soil still clinging, somehow, to my spinach

  • small stones between my shoe and sole

  • people who use hashtags and at-symbols in Facebook; it doesn't support that, and they're annoying everywhere they ARE supported, so knock it off

  • people who "Like" their own posts and their own responses; what happened? did they mis-click? are there other times where they DON'T LIKE what they've written?

I'm just sayin'.

Yeah, I know it's likely just a formality, and they're feeling about as remorseful as the other times when "もうしわけございません" is used... which is not particularly rueful. It just boggles my mind that these notes and, by extension, going home on time is such a rarity.

EA Sports MMA First Look Preview for Xbox 360 -
The whole concept of parrying is something that was largely missing from UFC: Undisputed, and EA reckons its inclusion will greatly add to the authenticity of the fights.
Missing? WTF? Countering-to-grapple, countering to Muay-Thai clinch, countering-to-submission, major and minor counterstriking based on strike interception... Which game was this guy playing? At least he calls UFC 2009 "superlative."

D23 lures Disney fans - Entertainment News, TV News, Media - Variety:
Disney also used the confab to unveil Double Dare You as a toon production label with Guillermo del Toro to produce scarier animated pics; "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" as the title of the fourth swashbuckler in the franchise, to bow in 2011; "The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made" for the return of the Muppets on the bigscreen; and a 3-D revamp of the "Star Tours" ride.

Who the hell do I complain to about the ads that are appearing on Xbox Live's Dashboard?

The Dashboard auto-loads the "Spotlight" channel which has, until now, limited itself to new game announcements, content, tips and strategies, community events, and in the non-game category, special Netflix offers or Xbox media-specific music and videos. All about the Xbox 360 and things you can do with it, no problem. Occasionally there are TV show and movie promotions for items which are not yet for download on the service, but they usually offer free gamerpics or themes for the 360; those are called presents.

The other day there was a item in it for Progressive Auto Insurance. Like a trained monkey, I automatically selected it to see if it had a contest or some DLC for it, or Forza or PGR DLC associated with it. But selecting it just played a low resolution TV advertisement. Nothing to do with games, nothing to do with Netflix or any other XBL-connected service. A TV ad hosted front and center on the Live service I'm paying US$50 a year for. What's next, unskippable advertisements?

Edit: Apparently SONY already had this great idea. I am speechless.
Thanks to [ profile] andrewv for the clue.

Huh. So's business model went from being "free, everywhere" to having "free, but not available everywhere" to "Enjoy 30 songs which aren't the songs you wanted to hear, but are related to the ones you like, because they're by the same artist, or similar artists... now that you've had 30 songs' worth, how do you feel about US$3/month to keep kind of hearing what you wanted?"

I'll poke around and see what I'm still able to listen to there. If they've shut off Friends' "radio" stations, promotional channels and all that, I'm going to be impressed with the level of stupidity.

Why do authors, hollywood, studios, etc. get angry at fanfic writers, but music bands never seem to get angry at other, lesser known, perhaps less talented bands for making weird, freaky, sometimes bad cover versions of songs?

BBC NEWS | Africa | Nigeria bikers' vegetable helmets:
In the city of Kaduna, drivers waved palm fronds and rode in convoy to protest at the price of helmets, which can cost up to $29 (£20).

They say passengers often steal the helmets once they reach their destination.

Stories have also appeared in the local papers highlighting passengers' fears that the helmets could be used by motorcyclists to cast spells on their clients, making it easy for them to be robbed.

Sometimes I think about doing translation work, and then randomly find and think about translating sentences like "Traceability and automatic data capture in the value chain for farmed salmon." -- At which point I'd just throw up or start crying.

The Fabulous Forum | The un-goat, and Francona's slow hook, volume IV | Los Angeles Times:
Gina Carano didn't look over-hyped, by the way. She won a unanimous decision over a game but over-matched Kelly Kobold. Up next, it appears, is a much anticipated fight against Brazilian brawler Cristiana Cyborg. Look for that match to happen early next year, possibly on Elite XC's first venture into pay-per-view.
Are those names for real, or are they character names like in the WWE?

Slow GTA IV sales to trouble EA/Take-Two talks? // News:
However, NPD Data shows that GTA IV was the 46th best-selling game in August, down from 45th place in July. The slowing sales have caused concerns that, with 8.5 million units sold to date, the title may fail to meet sales expectations.

The Straight Dope: Does Tylenol + alcohol = liver failure?:
The real problem with drugs like Tylenol is that the difference between a therapeutic (that is, medically effective) dose and a toxic one is surprisingly small. In adults the maximum safe dosage is four grams (eight 500-milligram tablets) over a 24-hour period. The toxic dose is a mere seven grams taken all at once.
Edit: removed the 2nd part of the article title, because we all know it's a trick question; socialist Canada cannot afford buildings. ;-P
