mexican food

Pretty sure that I have previously bemoaned the lack of Mexican food in my part of Japan. I haven't sought it out in Tokyo, but Osaka is barren for the stuff. There was a shop called Pink Adobe in Osaka, and I found that there was a branch in Kobe. When I went there on Saturday, our first trip to Kobe in nearly a year, Pink Adobe was out of business, the storefront featuring the kind of gutted appearance of a shop that has been cleared out for some months, and the new inhabitants of the space not yet decided.

All this by wayward way of saying, I would dearly love a burrito right about now. Preferably big and smooshy, with a lot of sour cream and maybe chili colorado.

There's a few decent spots in Tokyo. I've been to one in Nishi-Ogikubo (I think?), one in Naka-Meguro, one in Daikanyama (with an Iron Chef chef, no less), and another in... Omote-Sando was it?

Two of the four were great (Daikanyama one and Omote-Sando one), and the other two were very good. If you ever wanna go sometime when you're in Tokyo, lemme know and maybe we can arrange an outing with some of the Mexican fans. :)

The other night me and a dear old friend went to one around...　Nishi-Shinjuku, I believe? Anyway, it was in the basement of an overpriced hotel and seemed like a branch of a US chain I'd never heard of. It was tasty, too, and the place looked like it was making a KILLING from expatriate customers (we had to wait half an hour for our booth). I can probably ask her for details on the location again...

You're thinking of El Torito. There's a few of them here (and prolly in Osaka too, I'd imagine). El Torito isn't bad at all, but it's more of a chain-type place, and as AV puts it, it's more Tex-Mex than actual Mexican.

I guess they exist in the US, too, though I'd never seen one when I was there.

Waiting an hour is about the norm for El Torito in San Jose as well. It's not bad, but it is to Mexican as TGIFriday's is to traditional Americana food. My favorite burritos are from the side-deli in a Mexican corner shop in Santa Cruz. Yummy, with a capital "yum."
