i'd guess they are using the invisible pixel link method. you essentially place an img link in the body of the email and have the url to that image encoded with an unique identifier for that message. when their server registers a request for that image, they know the message has been read. very common for spammers that are verifying email address victims.

yet another reason for turning off displaying remote linked html images in mail. which -- since this is becoming a much more popular solution for the virus weary -- would pretty much limit the lifespan of this service's usefulness.

Yeah, that really is like having a window in my life that someone doesn't deserve.
But, if someone finds out I don't read those wretched forwarded jokes, maybe they'll take the clue :)
