Question about a specific SF novel

Dear Lazyweb,

I recently heard about an SF novel where humans and aliens come into contact; at first it appears that the aliens are intelligent / sentient, but it becomes apparent that they are not. Apparently the point is that intelligence is not necessarily a prerequisite for survival or evolutionary superiority.

Can anyone tell me what this book is? I want to read it.

It's called Blindsight. I reviewed it!

Also, it's online for free, cause that's the hot new publishing paradigm:

I read Blindsight sometime this winter/spring, but I mostly remember the vampire-predator thing.

Which, I suppose, blends into that "What's the evolutionary point of intelligence" arguement.

Have to re-read it.

Also want to hit "Starfish" again. Which by an amazing amount of non-coincidence is by Peter Watts.

Hey, welcome back to the web! How was the wedding?

I've got Starfish around somewhere, but my Palm, which was my ebook reader of choice, died the bad death over a year ago. Since then I've been playing vidjo games on the train instead of reading. And rotting my brain. But I'm going to find a way to read Blindsight, mark my words...
