30 Days of Night
Jun. 27th, 2008 01:43 pmFinished 30 Days of Night (the movie version) last night. Probably the best vampire movie since Near Dark. I liked the makeup on the vampires; for monster make-up, it was reasonably subtle. It made them look a natural predator, like a tiger or a shark.
If I have to pick something to complain about, I wasn't fond of the scene in the general store:
The little girl vampire was not very effective, it made her evil as opposed to just confused, transformed. There was a hell of a racket, and apparently half the survivors in the store didn't hear it -- how big is that store supposed to be, anyway? And lastly they never follow up at all on where she came from, since she spoke English and appeared to be a freshly turned vampire.
Other than that, the pacing was good, the sets were stark and effective, the overall mood was bleak and almost hopeless, several scenes were just beautifully shot, and the vampires were just horribly evil. And there is a tractor with a giant fucking chainsaw on the front of it which gets good use. Can't ask for much more than that.
