took the day off

The cold caught up with me. I'm cracking my neck every five minutes; I should just go to sleep. I'm brain dead and tired, and all my joints ache. I had a fever of 38.4 last night, and have had smaller fevers occur and break today.

Want to play games or read, but don't have the brainpower. I watched "300" last night; it was more repetitive and preachy than I'd expected. I kept hearing how it could have benefited from being "more ambiguous" or "less direct" and now I understand what the reviews meant. Beautiful, gorgeous film with only a few shots that looked as though the group were being awkwardly greenscreened against a virtual set. I watched "Children of Men" today, and it redeemed my faith in cinema. Good grief, what an amazing film. It's ugly and beautiful, horrifying and inspiring all at once. I actually had to get up and walk away from it for awhile, to get my mental bearings back.

So, yes: sleep.  Now.

I felt fairly close to your thoughts on both films.

Sickess sucks man. Hope the sleep helped.

It did, but my wife called to ask how things were going while I was sound asleep. I didn't even know what DAY it was; bizarro.

Thanks for the kind thoughts.

I love 300, but I don't think it's very good.

Also, Children of Men DIDN'T win the Oscar for Best Cinematography in probably the most confusing upset of the past 10 years. THOSE TRACKING SHOTS!

I think that I might use that description, moving forward. Man, seriously, it's beautiful. And it's a triumph of comicbook presentation (though not as much of a triumph as Sin City). Too bad the editor didn't notice that half the talky shots are redundant mouthings of the same sentiments.

The comic was better.

I'll read that Children of Men link later... When I can read a block of text longer than three lines. :-/

Er, btw, the link is further down the page, which is why my context is fooked.

Get well soon, bro.. hugs.

Thanks, duder. NICE ICON.

I have such absolute faith in anything Clive Owen's in since I saw him in Closer.

...and Children of Men made me cry like a child. It takes all of our base human emotions and examines them with an unflinching horror and awe.

I'll have to see that as well. I've got a copy of "Layer Cake" which some consider to be the reason Daniel Craig landed the Bond role. I'm really happy Clive Owen didn't get the Bond role, though maybe "Closer" will change my mind, there.

Was it my imagination, or did Theo never once pick up a gun in "Children of Men"? I think he killed that one guy with a car battery, but I don't recall him firing a shot.

300 - beautiful to look at, nice combat, and some creepy giant hand backrub. All of this brought down several notches by a boring story back at home that could have been cut.

Children of Men - should have easily won the Oscar for best cinematography. Check out this article to see how crazy the tracking shots were: http://www.fxguide.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=390

Now you just have to watch Idiocracy to get the flipside of the Children of Men premise!

[identity profile] chronovore.livejournal.com 2007-11-26 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That's on my list; I think I'll see about a p2p solution there. Thanks for both the above-listed movies, by the way! They are much appreciated!

Man, I am so with you on the cinema reviews. 300 made me cry for spending that much money on a 2-hour long video game cutscene (saw it in Japan).

Children of Men, by contrast, made me cry for being so unbelievably good. However, for some reason, I tend to get scenes from Children of Men and 28 Days Later confused in my head.

I can see that: you've seen one postapocalyptic London, you've seen 'em all?

Yeah, I guess that's the conclusion my brain comes to. The "racing out of London while you still can" theme doesn't help me to keep them straight.

Of course, neither does licking the lead paint off of Chinese toys, but nobody's perfect.

I hope you feel better soon!

I saw "Children of Men" and "Pan's Labyrinth" in the same two week period, which was a huge mistake. I felt like I'd gone ten rounds with a therapist prizefighter after seeing such beautiful, heartwrenching films in a row. I still go round and round in my head for which film got robbed of the "Best Picture" Oscar more.

"300" was damned pretty and great - if you don't get the brain too active. I liked the book marginally better in some ways even if the movie managed to create and support a better subplot than the original source material.

And get well soon! I'll be joining you in sickness-land soon, methinks, unfortunately.
