When someones write something like this:
"For example, my fantasies are just getting weirder and weirder. Dangerously weird (...) If people knew the kinds of things I think about anymore, I'd probably be locked away. No probably about it, I know I would be."
and then does something like this, I lose all tolerance for a system that allows for "not-guilty by reason of insanity" pleas. This guy killed a girl, probably in part because he chose not to take his anti-depression meds. When one has consciously acknowledged that one's mind is operating dangerously outside the normal range, and in this case even requires medicine to regulate it, it is time to seek additional help and guidance. Good god.

I know I have a lot of friends who are against the death penalty, but to me this monster seems to justify it single-handedly.

And to think, Hufu could have solved all of this.

A warning: Once you learn about Hufu, you can never unlearn about it. Click on that link at your own risk.

Is it funny that all the sidebar links return Merchant Encountered Fatal Errors messages?

America is home to an increasingly violent society. Our politics, our religions, our entertainment, etc. are all largely aggressive in nature which, in turn, creates a breeding ground for the guys like the one you mention above. That guy fits the "why do dogs lick their balls" category to a tee. The problem is that we're inundated 24/7 with dogs licking their balls. If a country ever needed a fucking reboot and defrag, it's us and now.

I completely agree that the USA needs a serious re-assessment; if we were an individual, the neighboring countries would be staging an intervention on our behalf. Sadly, a nation spanning five time zones is hard to pin down, let alone find all the alky-hol stashes.

And I don't have an issue with violence in media per se, but I think the hypocrisy that surrounds it causes more confusing harm than it is currently credited with.

I think whatever is wrong with Kevin Underwood goes a lot farther than something treatable with anti-depression meds. I'm on Zoloft and Abilify. When I miss doses for a while, I get insomnia, become increasingly irritable and have trouble concentrating, and I have mood swings. I don't rape and murder 10 year olds.

Not sure what to say here; I have several friends on various levels of meds, and I suspect none of them are likely to rape and kill children if they go off those meds. I think you are making a generalization fallacy here; there is a fundamental difference between the relative severity of illnesses; at least I hope your anecdotal evidence of missing your meds is indicative of that. I specifically note that the guy's problem is "probably in part" due to it; dependent on the diagnosed severity of the problem, there should be a corresponding increase in effort to follow the program.

What's more, I am assuming you are not even fantasizing about raping and killing 10 year olds, which speaks more to the point I want to make. This man knew on some level that he was about to make some very bad decisions. At that point he should have sought additional help.

OK, I see your various IM names on your profile. I don't actually IM much, but I will plug you in when I get back to my Mac; work discourages IM clients. Meh.

You know, it's possible to have all the bad thought *and not do anything about them*. Seriously. Take your meds, keep up on your reprogramming, and consider consequences. Sheesh. What a twit.

I wonder if Hufu sells better than Spam? :>

Why bother with Hufu? Just hang out behind the hospital and pick up plenty of scrapple.

And, yeah, I have bad thoughts every day and don't act on them; however I am also able to identify the lines between what is socially acceptable, and what will cause backlash. This guy knew he was edging toward The Bad Place, and still didn't seek help.

Yup. I'm sorry, Mr. Psycho, but you're not allowed in society anymore. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, and how's that IV? Comfy? Night night.

I think certain actions are too large to recover from. Murder someone? Sorry, you don't get to go out and try that again. Kill all your kids? No, you may *not* have more kids. It's not that we don't trust you...well, yeah, it is. :)

In a poorly titled but fascinating book, Mind Hunter, John Douglas talks about his groundbreaking work in incorporating profiling serial killers for the FBI. One major difference between regular psychological practice and using psychology to catch criminals (and to maintain their incarceration through parole denial) is that merely mentally unhealthy people want to recover. However, killers do not want to get better, they simply don't want to be caught, and once caught they want to get out. Their motivation is entirely different from someone who is sick; they will game the system because they see the rules and understand the parameters of their incarceration, but cannot relate to society as a whole or relate to other humans as beings with worth similar to their own.

All this as a longwinded way of saying, when we catch a serial killer, Douglas believes that there is really only one way to make certain that they are not given a chance to repeat their crimes. That solution is not to reform them, but to put them to death.
