Preview of FOX’s New Drama ‘Drive’:

DRIVE is an action-fueled drama following a diverse group of Americans driving for their lives (or the lives of their loved ones) in a sinister, cross-country road race. Some of them have been coerced into joining The Race; others have sought out The Race themselves, hearing rumors of the $32-million prize. Each has a reason to compete. And each must win.

Among the varied racers are a man thrust into The Race in an effort to find his missing wife; a single mother competing under great strain … or possibly something much more strange; a buttoned-down scientist and his rebellious 15-year-old daughter; two brothers in a stolen, pimped-out Caddy that carries secrets of its own; and a gorgeous and mysterious female stowaway who may well hold the key to the secrets of The Race.

There are other competitors as well, but when no one is told whom they’re racing against, or even where the finish line is, anything is possible. With each mile clocked, the drivers get closer, not only to the finish line and a critical, life-changing victory, but to understanding the mystery behind The Race itself.

I'd not be excited about this if it weren't for both Fillon and Minear's involvement. The concept itself seems like it could easily be too clichéd. Then again, space westerns and vampire hunters don't sound entirely hopeful from their descriptions, either.

I can't decide if I'm more convinced they ripped it from a video game (Twisted Metal), or an old Carradine flick (Death Race 2000).

Any chance for a homicidal clown doing an Euthanasia Day run in an ice cream truck?..;)

I think it looks more like Cannonball Run meets Running Man. It could make a great videogame, provide MOTHERFUCKING FOX doesn't kill it before the end of the first season... I'm guessing Joss Whedon is not attached, despite Minear's involvement.

It'll probably end up being like One Piece on land or something, with the race becoming less important just so they can keep the series pumping out.

I'm extra unfamiliar with One Piece. I know Gman likes it heaps, but I've never been able to see it as much more than a Dragonball replacement...

I'll watch it. Don't exactly know why, aside from Minear and Fillon, but I will watch it.

Hell, if I'll give an hour of my life to the fucking Black Donnellys, I can give Nathan Fillon 20,000 households.

Boo ya! And the wimmen of those 20,000 households will thank you.

I need to take more advantage of my Nielsen viewer status, I think. "So... you're a Fillon fan, eh? I can guarantee that ol' Nate gets his fair share of households viewing the new show, if the price is right. Get me?"

Play my cards right, and I could watch TV for a living. A horrible, bed-sore ridden living.

I was reminded of the short story "Along the Scenic Route" by Harlan Ellison, more than anything else...

After reading an excerpt, and the synopsis at Fictionwise, I don't see it, necessarily. I'm guessing that DRIVE's largely modern-day, and the stuff that, er, drives Fillon's character happens entirely away from the public face of the reality-TV show that the characters appear on.

Jesus. It just dawned on me that I'm excited about watching a TV show about a fictional "reality" show. I think I just meta'd myself.

We're really running out of stuff to watch these days. Every show we watch on NBC hasn't been airing new episodes in a few weeks, including Heroes, The Office, 30 Rock, and less vitally Studio 60 and Law and Order. We're kind of looking for something to fill the summer gap and with Nathan Fillion we'd be willing to give this a shot.

Definitely has that Twisted Metal / Mortal Kombat / DoA "everyone's here to win for their own reasons" shtick - I see where Tox is coming from.
