...or "Naw, I'm Just Jossing You"

I caved and ordered the season three box set for Buffy Season 4 - it was only ¥5400 at Amazon.co.jp (including shipping, which triggers at ¥1500 purchases here!), and my dishwashing evenings were lacking something to look forward to, other than a load of clean dishes at the far end of that labor.

Last night though I watched the "Our Dear Mrs. Reynolds" episode of Firefly. I remain convinced that the series would have eclipsed BtVS if it had been given a 2nd season. There are so many lines and pauses and looks and otherwise insanely great moments in that story. I found myself laughing out loud at the show, which only happens rarely with BtVS.

In a similar vein, I finished Season 1 of Veronica Mars on the train ride home last night - it doesn't finish particularly strongly, but it's a damned good show. It's Twin Peaks -meets- Beverly Hills 90210; or at least I think so, having never seen more than 5 minutes of 90210. I liked Veronica Mars - not sure if I'm going to cough up the ¥7743 for it; that's a bit rich for me, considering Kristen Bell doesn't even get her kit off.
...
*checks ep guide for the first time*
Oh. Oh, crap. I only watched 13 episodes.. no wonder I thought it was a weak finale. It wasn't a finale. Hooo.

In other news, I can't FIND SHIT lately. I'm commonly unable to see things that are right in front of my nose, but if I'm looking on behalf of someone else, I find things immediately. The wife says, "Have you seen the back of my earring?" I run my hand through the carpet near where I'm already sitting, and PRESTO! "Is this it?" The daughter says, "Where's my DS?" I say, "It's upstairs, behind the bookshelf, underneath that English book." And it is. I remember where things are, or I stumble upon them with stoopid-crazy luck. But last night we had a mosquito in the room, and I couldn't find that thing - we got bit several times, and spent more than an hour looking for the damned thing. Then I wanted my anti-bugbite-itch roll-on; and it wasn't around (I forgot that I'd accidentally taken it to work, where I now have TWO of them), and even when looking for a key that my daughter had misplaced only moments prior, we all looked and looked, wasting about an hour of the precious, scarce, post-dinner why-the-heck-aren't-you-in-bed time that is so treasured by parents. I'm only able to locate two of the 8 or so rechargeable batteries I've been stockpiling, and those two are in my Xbox wireless controller, removable only under penalty of Very Harsh, Eyebrow-Slanted Stares from Daddy. Maybe it's less that I can't find stuff - maybe it's just that "Someone Keeps Moving My Chair."

that episode is boss.

firefly spoiler alert
i love how they bring back saffron later. that episode is also boss. i love how they do that in general -- also with niska. i think it's obvious that firefly would have been great. hell, if it even was allowed to have a WHOLE first season. sigh.

i am looking forward to the continuations, though the comic that bridges the gap between firefly and serenity is clunky and not worth getting excited about (it's still an OK read, though.)

HAH! A spoiler alert in my LJ -- for a dead series, no less. I've got a couple friends who will certainly be amused. I'm famous for not keeping up with the times on media.

What continuations are you referring to?

i actually don't mind spoilers, but i dunno your stance and i don't know a lot of the people who read this blog. spoilers can't really ruin stories that are worth experiencing, IMO.

anyway i was referring to the heist one with saffron, i forget the title. and of course the two niska episodes. it's great how they did that... it's a clever way to keep an episodic show meaningful... i think both of those episodes would have been entertaining to those who had not seen what went before, but they were infinitely more so (particularly YoSaffBridge) because of prior events.

Ah. I thought you meant "continuations" of the story. I know there's an MMORPG planned (snore) and I think I read something about novels or comics that will be set in Firefly universe; at least one of them is before the movie, because (paraphrasingly) "the whole gang's together."

SPOILERS AND SHIT:
I can't believe that Joss basically flipped the bird at continuing the series in book or comic form as canon by whacking those two characters in the movie. I know Joss has said (http://www.warrenellis.com/?p=4656), (again, paraphrasingly) "Romeo and Juliet - happy ending? It could be good. Not great, though."

dunno, i think that killing them really brought tension to the story. i thought anybody could die. it was much more powerful and affecting for me because of that, to watch what followed.

MMORPG is gonna suck, since the whole genre is shit.

there are supposed to be comics and novels both, iirc, or last i heard anyway. one of my favorite authors (steven brust) has written a novel on spec, basically because he wanted to because he got an idea for one, and submitted it. if they don't publish it he's going to release it as fanfic, so we win either way. his style is perfect for firefly, so i'm pretty excited.

the MMORPG doesn't have any developers, they like licensed a freeware engine and expect fans to make all the content. lol.

BRUST! Right - I recall something about that now; if it doesn't get snapped up and published as a "real" novel, he'll go the fanfic route. I thought that was an interesting solution. And, yea, it'll be neat to have a real author trying their hand at the characters, not just Harry Potter/James T. Kirk slashficcers.

"Objecting Icon" sustained!

I think I was remembering your icon when I framed that particular example.

They could continue books and comics with a plot set before the finale but inbetween a couple of episodes. Happens all the time.

Kinkan - not bad, but a bit harsh. I'm "rolling" with Muhi lately, but that's not always effective - and it appears to age badly; the stuff I bought last month is WAY better than what I bought last summer (and am still using).

Wow, between VM and Buffy Season 1, you FAIL at television watching. Yeesh, man, do the Japanese just not have comprehensive disc menus? :P

In any case, the GF just blew through Season 4 Buffy and I have a hankering to rewatch the season finale of said Season. Season 4 may not be as strong as some other Buffy seasons but I loves it. I still maintain that you should watch Angel Season 1 concurrently for maximum viewing pleasure.

The actual finale of VM will blow you away. Veronica Mars Season 1 remains my favorite single season of TV for a reason. And if you really want to see Kristen Bell scantily clad, I'm sure there's Maxim scans out there and she had a leather-themed dance number in the TNT musical version of Reefer Madness.

And as for your bug problems - this is what you get for living in Japan. :P

...and that's what /you/ get for attempting HTML.

Seriously, though:
(a) My Veronica Mars failure is because that's all that particular P2P download included in the package. Looks like i get what i didn't pay for. My Buffy failure was just a lack of time; the kitchen in the new house is /in/ the living room, so watching TV while doing dishes is do-able.
(b) Thought about getting Angel S1 at the same time; then realized I've got way too many unwatched DVDs, and nearly didn't buy Buffy S4. I quit thinking about it and just hit "PROCEED TO CHECKOUT, BEYOTCH."
(c) Thanks for the heads-up on Reefer Madness. Crazy giant teeth aside, Bell is a total hottie. And I don't normally go for blondes.

*facepalms* I FAIL at HTML.

A)I see, I see. Well, I rue anyone who would keep a man from watching all of VM at once like God intended. This P2P provider shall be RUED! I envy your TV/dishwashing skillz.
B)Fair enough. I'm actually curious to see how well my GF picks up on the interseries crossovers, both tiny and huge, when she goes back and watches Angel. There's a beautiful Angel two-parter that directly follows an awesome Buffy two-parter . . . and it killed me not to follow it all up properly, but oh, well. If you can, try and put up Angel Season 1 after Buffy Season 4, depending on your fancy.
(Sidebar: The reason for our mad dash is that the "Once More, With Feeling" Buffy Musical is coming to town on August 3rd and 4th, so we have to get her to Season Six post haste. I'm very, very enthused. There's going to be Buffy-oke in multiple senses of the word!)
C)I'm not usually for non-chesty blondes but Bell's a sweetheart. She gets sexy hair in Season 3; which is, sadly, about the only thing I can recommend it for. Well, that and a pitch-perfect Series Finale that frustrated the crap out of me by being so damn good that it reminded me why I fell in love in the first place.
