Electronic Arts Acquires Hasbro License
Electronic Arts has announced a partnership with Hasbro to create a series of games based on the company's popular brands of toys for consoles, PC and mobile platforms. Interestingly, while the press release made no mention of a G.I. Joe video game -- the one Hasbro toy line most gamers would probably think is due for a game adaptation -- Variety confirms that a G.I. Joe game is indeed part of the deal, as well.

(...) But before you get too excited, it turns out Quartermann was right about a couple of other things: the G.I. Joe game isn't based directly on the classic line of action figures, but rather on the upcoming live-action movie adaptation. I've been wondering when this would turn up. It seems like this should be a natural license to bring to games; I wonder what has taken so long? For the current demographic of older male gamers, GI Joe is a nostalgic brand with a lot of history both in the toys and in the animated series. Taking this in line with the movie is a big, big mistake, as it is tied to whether or not the movie is any good. Instead they could tie it to the toy and animated series, avoid being tied to the movie release date, and enjoy a longer use of the license.

Aren't the Harry Potter games more directed at the books, or was that just the first couple?

I'm sorry, but this was so funny. And perfectly phrased. I totally heard it in my head.

Wierd. I've got an old coworker who's blog I follow who just took a job with Hasbro. She was searching for UI designers just yesterday in fact.

Don't think that's related to EA, it's just wierd to have two references to Hasbro in one day. That's probably more than I think of them in a year.

It's crazy how many tasty licenses they have, and how much they've managed to ENTIRELY fuck up an entry into videogames. They're like the anti-nintendo.
