I'd thought to get one of those pre-cut salads at the store today, but when I went past the fish section in the supermarket there were prepared o-bento lunches, including one that had a big hunk of seasonal buri (large catch Yellowtail) grilled teriyaki style, two deep-fried shrimp, head and all, and a breaded deep-fried oyster which has just come into season. In addition, there were boiled Chinese snap peas and sato-imo, shredded gobo root, pickled octopus and seaweed, and a reasonable portion of rice which was topped with pickled plums.

The whole thing was ¥580. Sometimes I forget how nice it is to eat in this country, but today I'm well reminded.

Mmmm, that sounds delicious! Especially the oyster (I like 'em cooked), but the whole thing sounds very exciting.

Japan was a fun trip for me, food-wise. I'm usually so persnickety about not eating things I don't recognize, but within a day of arriving, I gave all that up and just flowed with it. As long as the food was not actively alive, I'd try it. I had wonderful o-bento on the shinkansen, and I have no idea whatsoever I ate. Also developed a fixation on those cream corn fritter things--what are those called? Yum.

Dude, my cousin's husband's family (i know, just go with me here) is from SD. Every year they go on an ocean fishing expedition via chartered boat down towards Cabo San Lucas. This year they caught about 300lbs of buri and brought it all home. They asked us if we wanted some (they're reasoning was funny: "Mayumi's Japanese, she'll probably eat all this fish") and we said sure. I thought they'd throw just a couple of steaks our way, but they gave a bag of about 40lbs of buri steaks that now reside in our freezer. The fish was frozen on board the boat after it was caught so it's really fresh. Awesome fish luck is awesome.

I thought you wrote "shredded GO ROBOT", but that did not compute.
